Finding “me time” can feel almost impossible as a mom, especially if you’re a new parent. Between work, carpool, dinner, cleanup, and soccer practice, there's hardly any time to do laundry, let alone squeeze in “me time.” But carving out some alone time for yourself is super important for keeping your sanity, avoiding resentment, lowering stress-levels, and ensuring your well-being is in check.
At first glance, this seems impossible, I know. What’s worked for me is finding small pockets of time each week. Instead of tackling one big thing, focusing on small things throughout the week has really made a difference in my mental (and physical!) health. By finding moments throughout your, let's face it, long day—during nap times, early mornings, or late evenings—you can create opportunities to recharge and practice self-care. This guide will give you practical tips and strategies to easily blend self-care into your busy schedule.

How to find “me time” in your daily routine
Finding time for yourself after becoming a mom doesn't have to be overwhelming. By making small changes and being intentional with your schedule, you can find moments of “me time” throughout the day. Here are some ways to make time:
- Wake up 30 minutes earlier: Start your day off right by waking up just 30 minutes earlier than usual. Use this time to meditate, journal, exercise, or enjoy a hot cup of coffee in peace.
- Utilize nap times and TV time: When your little one takes a nap or is engrossed in their favorite show, take advantage of the downtime. Use this time to read, get in a 20 minute workout, or simply rest. If you’re a new mom, start this habit early on with your newborn.
- Say no to unnecessary commitments: We often feel obligated to say yes to everything, but it's important to prioritize your time and energy. Learn to say no to things that don't bring you joy or add value to your life.
- Delegate tasks: As moms, we often try to do everything ourselves. But delegating tasks can free up some of your time for self-care. Ask your partner or family members for help with household chores or errands (even if you feel like you could do it better!).
20 Self-Care Practices for Moms
Here are my top self-care practices that I implement into my weekly routine:
1. Establish a morning routine just for you
Start your day with a few moments of peace and quiet. Whether it's sipping coffee, reading a book, or going for a walk, having this time to yourself can set the tone for the rest of your day. If I decide to go for a walk or exercise, it usually means I have to wake up about an hour early. To make sure I get enough sleep, I'll go to bed earlier the night before so I can still feel rested and refreshed.
2. Incorporate physical activity into your week
Find a type of exercise that brings you joy and make it a priority. Whether it's yoga, dance, or pilates, moving your body is not only good for your physical health but also your mental wellness. Plus, exercise releases endorphins which can boost your mood and energy levels.
Before having kids, I used to go to my favorite pilates studio four to five days a week. Now, that's not really doable, so I've adapted to working out at home. I still do pilates every week, but now I use a workout app to make it work (my current favorite is The Sculpt Society).
3. Find your creative outlet
Whether it's painting, writing, or cooking, find a creative outlet that allows you to express yourself and relax. This can also be a fun way to connect with other moms who share the same interests. Here’s an idea to combine many of these creative outlets: a cook book club! Once a month, pick a cookbook then rotate hosting a potluck dinner where everyone needs to cook a recipe from that month’s cookbook.
4. Prioritize nutrition that fuels your body and soul
As moms, we often prioritize our children's nutrition over our own. But taking care of ourselves also means nourishing our bodies with nutritious food. Plan and prepare meals that not only provide sustenance but also bring joy to your taste buds.
5. Schedule regular health check-ups
As busy moms, the last thing we prioritize is our own health. But it's important to schedule regular check-ups and appointments to make sure you are taking care of your physical and mental health. Stay up-to-date on vaccinations, screenings, and any necessary medical appointments. You are your best advocate, and you should ask the hard questions and push back to ensure you are getting taken care of.
6. Cultivate a support network
Being a mom can be overwhelming and isolating at times. That's why it's important to cultivate a support network of other moms, friends, or family members who understand and can offer emotional support when needed. This can also be a great way to share advice, resources, and connect with others who are going through similar experiences.
7. Master the art of saying no
As moms, we often feel the need to say yes to every request or invitation that comes our way. But it's important to learn how to say no and set boundaries for yourself. Saying no doesn't make you a bad mom, it just means you are prioritizing your own well-being.
8. Embrace mindfulness and meditation
Taking a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness and meditation can have a positive impact on your mental well-being. This can help reduce stress levels, improve focus and bring more awareness to your thoughts and emotions. You don't necessarily need to meditate and repeat positive affirmations– you can also sit in silence and just think!
9. Set aside time for reading or learning
As a mom, it can be easy to let our own personal interests and hobbies fall by the wayside. But it's important to make time for these things in order to maintain a sense of self outside of being a parent. Set aside some time each day or week to read, learn something new, or listen to an informative podcast.
10. Plan regular social outings without kids
While spending time with our children is important, it's also crucial to have some adult-only time. Plan regular social outings with friends or your partner without the kids. This can give you a much-needed break and allow you to reconnect with others outside of your role as a mom.
11. Adopt a skincare routine that makes you feel good
Self-care also includes taking care of our physical appearance. Find a skincare routine that works for you and stick to it. This can be a relaxing way to start and unwind your day, leaving you feeling refreshed and confident.
12. Create a cozy, personal space at home
Having a designated space in your home that is just for you can be a great way to recharge and relax. It doesn't have to be a whole room – even just a corner with some cozy pillows and blankets can do the trick. Use this space to read, indulge in your favorite beverage, exercise, or do something you enjoy.
13. Spend time outdoors
Nature has a way of calming our minds and reducing stress. Make it a point to spend some time outside every day, even if it's just for a short walk around the block. Recently, I've decided to go one a long walk with our dog, Bear, each day. It's amazing how refreshed (and productive!) I feel after spending time outside and soaking up some vitamin D.
14. Keep a gratitude journal
It's easy to get caught up in the chaos of motherhood and forget about all the wonderful little things in our lives. Make a habit of writing down a few things you're grateful for each day. This can help shift your perspective and remind you of the good things, even on tough days.
15. Lower your expectations
Motherhood is messy and unpredictable, and it's important to remember that we can't control everything. It's okay to let go of some expectations and just go with the flow. Don't beat yourself up if things don't go as planned – instead, focus on being present in the moment. Easier said than done, right?
16. Hire people to help
Asking for or hiring help is not a sign of weakness – it's a way to prioritize your mental and physical health. Whether it's hiring a babysitter for some self-care time or getting assistance with household chores, don't be afraid to delegate tasks and take some pressure off yourself.
17. Use screen time for breaks
It's easy to feel guilty about giving our kids screen time, but sometimes it's necessary for our own sanity. Use this time as a break for yourself – whether it's to take a shower, read a book, or just relax and recharge. And remember, moderation is key.
18. Stop cleaning your house so much
It's tempting to constantly clean and tidy up when you have little ones running around, but it's important to take a step back and let go of perfection. Your house doesn't need to be spotless all the time.
19. Take a day off social media
Social media can be a great way to connect with other moms and find support, but it can also contribute to feelings of inadequacy and comparison. Take a break from scrolling through perfectly curated Instagram feeds and focus on living in the moment with your family.
20. Consider therapy or counseling
Motherhood can be overwhelming and it's completely normal to struggle with the transition. Seeking therapy or counseling is not a sign of weakness – it's a way to prioritize your mental health and work through any challenges you may be facing.
Being a mom is hard work and it's okay to prioritize yourself sometimes. By practicing self-care and finding ways to recharge, you'll be able to show up as the best version of yourself for your family. So take a deep breath, let go of any guilt, and make time for yourself – you deserve it.
