This post is in partnership with Perelel. I only endorse products I believe in and use myself.
The stress and mental load of working motherhood, combined with hectic summer schedules and planning a huge international trip, have left me not feeling my best. I've been bloated, and often resorting to snacking on my kids' dinner scraps, which definitely isn’t helping.
To optimize my time and health, I've started habit stacking (adding new habits to the routines I already have). Since I love starting my day with a large glass of water, I thought it would be a great habit to stack to add a scoop of greens powder to boost my immune system, gut, and overall health.
But which greens powder is the best? I did what I do best: research. I took the top two popular greens powders on the market, Perelel Synbiotic Greens Powder and AG1, and put them to the test. Here’s my honest take on the best greens powder for gut health and overall wellness.
I compared each greens powder on 4 criteria: Nutrition & Safety, Probiotic Effectiveness, Taste & Texture, Convenience & Cost.
TLDR: Perelel is my preference! Try it now for 20% off your first order with code NMM20

Criteria #1: Nutrition & Safety
Perelel Synbiotic Greens
Perelel’s greens blend packs in a variety of superfoods and greens like organic spirulina, spinach, kale, chlorella, and broccoli. Plus, it's enriched with antioxidants from fruits (PhytoServ™ Fruit Blend provides the antioxidant equivalent of a full serving of fruit), prebiotics and probiotics. It is made from organic ingredients and free of added sugars.
This formula was developed specifically to not have any added vitamins or minerals to layer safely with your existing vitamin routine. Designed by doctors and OB-GYNs and notably safe for pregnant and breastfeeding moms, it avoids any herbs or ingredients that might be risky during this important period.
Other safety considerations: gluten-free, soy-free, non-GMO. Made in the U.S and third-party tested.
AG1
AG1’s superfood blend includes spirulina, wheat grass, alfalfa, barley, chlorella, broccoli, spinach, carrot, beet root, and green tea. The second ingredient in its superfood mix is lecithin, which is actually not typically considered a superfood, instead known for its emulsifying properties since it's a fatty substance found in soybeans, egg yolks, sunflower seeds. It contains a blend of 75 ingredients, including a wide range of vitamins and minerals, stress adaptogens, functional mushrooms plus prebiotics and probiotics. It is free of added sugars.
AG1 functions more like a multivitamin supplement than a typical greens powder. If you're already taking a multivitamin, prenatal vitamin, or any supplement with specific nutrients, AG1 might not be the best choice, since it could lead to an excess of certain nutrients and be taxing on your liver. It's important to be aware that AG1 contains herbs, adaptogens, and other ingredients that aren't considered safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Other safety considerations: gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and non-GMO. Third-party tested.
Criteria #2: Probiotic Effectiveness
A note on prebiotics: Probiotics are the good bacteria that help keep your gut and immune system healthy, while prebiotics are the food that helps those probiotics thrive. Probiotics and prebiotics need to be in the right balance to be most effective. They have a synergistic relationship, working best together.
A note on probiotics: Not all probiotics can survive the journey to the gut and withstand the harsh environment of the digestive tract. Spore-forming probiotics are highly resilient to harsh conditions, and can survive the digestive process and colonize the gut effectively. Non-spore-forming probiotics require a protective medium to survive the journey through the stomach and intestines as they are less resilient to harsh conditions.
Perelel Synbiotic Greens
Perelel’s Synbiotic Greens Powder is designed with synergy in mind. It combines prebiotic inulin from Jerusalem Artichoke Root and probiotic Bacillus subtilis spores to create a powerful synbiotic source. The spore-based Bacillus subtilis, can survive high temperatures and can pass through digestion unharmed until it reaches your gut, ensuring maximum effectiveness (unlike non-spored based probiotic strains). This means it also does not need to be refrigerated, so you can easily travel with it.
AG1
AG1 combines prebiotics from inulin from apple, beets, and artichoke with probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. Unlike Perelel, AG1’s probiotics are not spore-based, and there's a risk of them losing potency before reaching the gut since they are less resilient to the harsh conditions during digestion.
Criteria #3: Taste & Texture
Perelel Synbiotic Greens
From first-taste I found Perelel’s Acai flavor refreshing, and easily drinkable. It’s got a subtle sweetness, slight tartness, and hint of berry flavor. It dissolves quickly when using a mini electric whisk, or when shaken in a closed bottle, with very little sediment after sitting for a bit. I prefer to drink it with ice and a straw.
AG1
I’d consider AG1 an acquired taste. After about a week it became much more tolerable, and more drinkable. It's got a grassy undertone, and strong (almost artificial) sweetness, with a lingering aftertaste. The powder did not always dissolve completely after using a mini electric whisk or by shaking in the closed bottle that came in the Welcome Kit, with some sediment typically found in my cup or bottle.
