This post is in partnership with Coterie. I only endorse products I believe in.
You think once you're out of the diaper phase, you're in the clear. But the potty training years have a way of humbling you. Turns out, just because the diaper pail is gone, it doesn’t mean the wiping ends. You’re still on bathroom duty, still reaching for wipes, and suddenly realizing how often those wipes need to go somewhere. And if you’re like me, you’d rather not make your bathroom trash can the designated spot.I decided to compare three flushable wipes brands to see which one is really the best. Here’s my honest take on Coterie, Honest, and a classic, Cottonelle.

Flushable Verification
Just because a wipe says “flushable” doesn’t mean it actually is. The term is not tightly regulated, so many brands don’t meet industry standards for sewer and septic safety. To test this, I placed 1 wipe submerged in water for 1 hour to see how much it naturally broke down.
Coterie
My real test results: Coterie's wipe dissolved very well, it broke down into small pieces that easily “crushed” between my fingers into a pulp like consistency. They’re lab tested to disintegrate in under 30 minutes and meet both IWSFG guidelines and INDA GD4 criteria for sewer and septic safety. They’re durable when wiping, but break down like toilet paper once flushed.
Honest
My real test results: this wipe didn't dissolve at all! It was still a full solid wipe when I took it out of the water, and I really had to rub my fingers together to pull it apart. Honest claims its wipes meet both IWSFG and INDA GD4 flushability guidelines. But the brand recommends flushing only one wipe at a time, with a max of two per flush. It's a hard no for me on feeling confident this wouldn't ruin my plumbing over time.
Cottonelle
My real test results: this wipe didn't automatically dissolve after being submerged, however with light pressure from my hands it did easily tear apart. Cottonelle claims their wipes are “plumber approved,” “septic-safe,” and break down like toilet paper. But unlike Coterie and Honest, there’s no mention of testing or compliance with recognized flushability standards like INDA or IWSFG. Without third-party verification, it’s hard to know how well these break down in real-world plumbing systems.

Functionality
Coterie
Given how much I love their diapers, I shouldn’t have been surprised by how well these wipes work. They’re generously sized (7 in. x 7.7 in.), super soft, and strong enough for real toddler messes. I love that they easily come out one at a time, which makes clean-ups way less chaotic, and the resealable pack keeps them fresh. In testing, 95% of parents said these got their kids cleaner than regular toilet paper, and I’d have to agree.
Honest
They’re a bit smaller (about 7.7 in × 5.6 in depending on the pack you buy), which means you may need to use more than one wipe in bigger messes. This is tricky, since the brand only recommends flushing one at a time (more on that below). They’re fine for everyday touch-ups, but in my experience, they don’t quite match Coterie’s heft when things get messy. These also come in a resealable pack.
Cottonelle
This one’s a no for me. The size (7.25 in × 5 in) and texture made it feel more like damp toilet paper than an actual wipe. I found myself needing more than one even for light clean-ups. Like the others, the pack is resealable, but that’s about the only box it checks for me.

Ingredient Safety
Coterie
Coterie’s wipes meet some of the highest safety standards out there, with certifications that go well beyond what you’ll typically find in wipes.
They’re:
- Made with 99% purified water and just five clean ingredients
- Free from fragrance, dyes, alcohol, parabens, and phthalates
- Hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive or eczema-prone skin
- Awarded the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance
- EWG Verified
- Certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 for safety from 1,000+ harmful chemicals
Honest
Honest’s wipes are made with over 99% water and a soft, plant-based cloth. They’re pH balanced, fragrance-free, and tested by both dermatologists and gynecologists for sensitive skin and intimate areas.
They’re:
- Made with over 99% water
- Free from fragrance, PEGs, phthalates, alcohol, parabens, and chlorine processing
- Hypoallergenic and pH balanced
- EWG Verified
While the ingredient list is solid, it doesn’t quite match the rigorous certifications and minimal formula that sets Coterie apart.
Cottonelle
Cottonelle’s wipes are plastic-free and made with biodegradable fibers. They’re also FSC-certified, meaning the materials come from responsibly managed forests. But beyond that, there’s very little ingredient transparency. Unlike other brands, specific details about what’s actually in the formula aren’t easily accessible, which raises some questions.
