Our summer was full of so many good things like travel, late nights and spontaneous adventures. But let’s be honest: routines went right out the window. And now with two kids headed back to school, I’m craving a little more structure and a lot more calm.

If you're also navigating the shift back into school mode, here are five small, doable changes that are helping our family ease into the new routine.

1. Make evenings smoother with Hiya Kids Bedtime Essentials

In our house, bedtime is never just “lights out.” There’s always something. One more story, another glass of water, a stuffed animal that’s gone missing.

That’s why we’ve added Hiya’s Kids Bedtime Essentials to our evening routine. It’s a chewable supplement made just for kids with clean, age-appropriate ingredients that help them wind down naturally. No melatonin, no sugar, and no gummy junk.

Why I love it:

  • L-theanine to support calm
  • Vitamin B6 for mood and focus
  • GABA for better sleep quality
  • Chamomile for relaxation
  • Zero sugar, zero artificial ingredients
  • Formulated just for kids

It’s been a gentle, reliable way to help my kids settle at night, and it’s made a noticeable difference in how smoothly our mornings go too.

2. Create a social story

When a big transition is coming up, we make a “social story.” It’s a simple, personalized story that explains what to expect in kid-friendly language. We’ve used them for new schools, summer camps, and even big feelings.

Here’s a quick formula:

  • Start with what’s happening: “Tomorrow is your first day of school.”
  • Walk through the steps: “Mom will drop you off. You’ll play, eat, rest, and learn. Then Dad will pick you up.”
  • Name the feelings: “You might miss us, and that’s okay. You can always tell your teacher.”
  • End with something positive: “School will be such a fun place.”

It doesn’t have to be fancy. Stick figures or printed photos work just fine.

3. Let your kids take the lead

Kids love feeling like they’re in charge, especially with little things. Letting them make a few choices gives them ownership and makes mornings and evenings a whole lot smoother.

Try offering simple decisions:

  • “Pick your outfit from these two.”
  • “Do you want grapes or apple slices in your lunch?”
  • “Want to pack your backpack or fill your water bottle?”
  • “Do you want to decorate your Hiya bottle?” Did I mention Hiya’s Bedtime Essentials come with a fun, refillable bottle and stickers to decorate?

When they’re part of the routine, they’re more likely to stick with it.

4. Use a nighttime (and morning) checklist

We’ve made little visual checklists for bedtime and morning routines, and they’ve been surprisingly helpful. They take the guesswork out of the equation and cut down on the constant reminding.

Keep it simple with 3 to 5 steps, for example:

  • Put on pajamas
  • Brush teeth
  • Pick a book
  • Lights out

Let your child decorate their checklist with stickers or drawings to make it their own.

5. Design your ideal morning too

Let’s not forget about us. A calm start doesn't just happen. We have to create it, with our own needs in mind. Here’s how I prioritize my morning:

  • Think about how I want to feel when I walk out the door.
  • List the 2 or 3 things that help me get that feeling: Maybe it’s coffee in silence, a 20 min workout or journaling.
  • Work backward to set my wake-up time based on including the time needed for these additional activities.
  • Commit to not snoozing.

Don’t forget to grab Hiya’s Bedtime Essentials for a smoother back-to-school transition!

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean chaos. These small, consistent changes are helping us start and end each day with more ease. And adding Hiya Bedtime Essentials to our routine has been a total win.

Here’s what makes it a no-brainer:

✅ Non-habit forming
